Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Bernard Ciarroni, OMM, CD

Honorary Colonel Ciarroni enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces on 10 July 1967 as a Trooper. During his military career, he served in operations; as a Master Corporal he crew-commanded, eventually becoming Troop Warrant Officer of the Assault Troop. He was promoted to Master Warrant Officer, was Squadron Sergeant Major of B Squadron and then in 1977, became the Regimental Sergeant Major of both the Royal Canadian Hussars (RCH) and the Area Battle School. He was commissioned as a Captain in 1981. Later he instructed at Tactics School, in Gagetown New Brunswick. Honorary Colonel Ciarroni commanded the RCH from 1997 to 2001, during which time he again served in operations with members of the regiment in “OPERATION RECUPERATION”.

In the spring of 2001, he was asked to become part of the Directing Staff at the Canadian Forces Land Command and Staff College in Kingston. He taught the Military Training and Assistance program. He continued to instruct the Reserve Staff course on weekends until 2005 while serving in a full-time capacity at the Information Management (IM) Group at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa.

From the fall of 2001 until 2007, Honorary Colonel Ciarroni served in several key posts in Ottawa, notably as Executive Assistant to the Assistant Deputy Minister (IM). He was also selected to be a member of the Chief of Defence Staff Action Teams and then transferred to Director General Strategic Planning as Chief of Staff. Honorary Colonel Ciarroni then worked on the Army Staff in Land Force Development until his retirement at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2011.

Honorary Colonel Ciarroni is a graduate of the Command and Staff College and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Military Merit in 2007. He was also awarded the Queen’s Silver, Golden, and Diamond Jubilee medals. 

In his civilian career, Honorary Colonel Ciarroni worked for Consolidated Aviation at Dorval and Mirabel Airports for seventeen years. He received awards from Ogden Allied Corporation and Air Canada for excellence in operations and management. From 2012 until 2019, he worked as the Deputy Command Senior Safety Officer for the Canadian Army. He has also taught Ethics and Critical Thinking at the Canadian Police College in Ottawa.

In the Montreal area, Honorary Colonel Ciarroni sat on the Boards of Directors for the Canada Sports Cultural Exchange Program and Crossroads, a part of St. Leonard’s society. He also served as President of the Montreal and Chomedy Lions Club. He is a Past-president of the Royal Canadian Armour Corps Association. In Ottawa, Honorary Colonel Ciarroni served as the President and Chair of the Bronson Centre for 9 years. Currently, he is the Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Army National Council of Honorary Colonels and continues to serve as the Director on the Board of the Montreal Cavalry Institute. He maintains an active leadership role in his local church. In 2020, he was appointed an honorary member of the Board of Directors of The Three Strohm Sisters Family Foundation.

Honorary Colonel Ciarroni is married to Lynn Harper-Ciarroni. They enjoy travelling and spending time with family and friends.
