Lieutenant-Colonel S. Funk, CD
William Shaun Funk joined the South Alberta Light Horse (SALH) in Medicine Hat, Alberta in September 1987. After being selected for Officer training in the Armour Corps, he departed for CFB Gagetown and successfully graduated as a RESO III candidate in 1989. Lieutenant Funk returned to CFB Gagetown in 1990 as a student on the Advanced Armour Reconnaissance course in 1990. He filled the roles of Armour Troop Leader, Recruiting Officer and Adjutant over the next couple of years with the SALH.
In 1992 Lieutenant Funk adventured to St-Hubert, Quebec to work as a staff officer at Force Mobile Command Head Quarters (FMC HQ). He learned to sail, met his wife and continued to work as a staff officer until 1996 when FMC HQ was transferred to Ottawa Ontario and became Land Staff Head Quarters (LSHQ) as a part of National Defense Head Quarters (NDHQ).
In 1994 Captain Funk joined the Royal Canadian Hussars (Montreal) as a Squadron Second in Command (2IC) and eventually became a Squadron Commander for the Headquarters and Services Squadron and then B Squadron in 1998. Captain Funk deployed with the Canadian Forces for three weeks in January 1998 during the remediation and infrastructure recovery after the Ice Storm in Eastern Canada. The spring of 1998 brought a move to Chesterville Ontario for Captain Funk and his wife to the Heritage home where they still live.
Captain Funk started working as a staff officer for the G3 of the Land Staff in 1999. He completed the Combat Team Commanders Course at CFB Gagetown in the fall of 1999 and was promoted to the rank of Major late in the year. He continued working as a staff officer for the G3 in various positions until 2006 when he deployed to Afghanistan for nine months working at CSTCA HQ Kabul, Afghanistan as a Canadian exchange officer with US Forces. He returned to work as a Staff Officer at Canadian Army Headquarters as the Business Planner for Chief of Staff Army Strategic (COS Army Strat), then as a staff officer dealing with Army Reserve issues in the Directorate of Land Force Development (DLFD) and currently as a staff officer for Chief of Staff Army Reserves (COS ARes).
In 2013 Major Funk returned to the RCH (Mtl) in the capacity of Deputy Commanding Officer (DCO). During his time with the RCH (Mtl) Major Funk has also been the DCO for the Combined 34 CBG Infantry Battalion during the 2 Canadian Division Summer Militia Concentration and the Deputy Task Force Commander for Operation NANULIVUT in Hall Beach, Nunavut.
