From 1958 to 1994, Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Karl Kramell served Canada as a career soldier, and was posted successively to Petawawa, Germany, Valcartier, Egypt, Saint-Hubert and several other locations. On three occasions during this time, he was posted as regular support staff to the Royal Canadian Hussars, as a master warrant officer from 1976 to 1977 as a captain from 1980 to 1983 and again briefly in 1985. While at the Force Mobile Command Headquarters, he paraded voluntarily with the Royal Canadian Hussars, and served principally as the officer commanding of “B” Squadron in Saint-Hubert.
In 1994, when he retired from the regular force, he joined the Royal Canadian Hussars and served as its commanding officer 1994 to 1997. After retiring from the Reserve Force, he stayed intimately involved with the regiment by serving for many years as the president or director of the Royal Canadian Hussars Association and the Montreal Cavalry Institute (formerly the Royal Canadian Hussars Institute). He also served as Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel from 2001 to 2007, and as president of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps Association for two years. He has been instrumental in ensuring the continuity of several entities that support the unit’s current and former members.
