The Royal Canadian Hussars Association offers its condolences to the family and friends of Trooper (retired) George Standish, who, from 1951 to 1953, served with the with “B” Squadron of the 6th Duke of Connaught’s Royal Canadian Hussars at the Jacques Cartier Barracks in Longueuil. George passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025, at the age of 93.

George grew up in the Croydon neighborhood of Saint-Hubert. In 1951, he  joined the unit and learned how to drive trucks and tanks at CFB Petawawa and a training area alongside the St-Lawrence seaway. After leaving the Reserves, he was employed for several years in the operation of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) line, then as a plumber, pipe fitter, and construction worker. In later years, he lived in Beloeil, St-Isidore-de-Clifton, Lennoxville and Sherbrooke.

George is predeceased by his, parents, his two sons Myles and Corin, and his brother Robert. He is survived by his spouse Elizabeth Cope, his children Scott (Stefanie); Jordan; Angela ( Loïc); and Derek (Laura) as well as his grandchildren Myles; Ludovik; Oliver; Kaegan; Zoë; Jackson, Elliott; Carter; Aodhan; and Matis.

We thank George for his service to his country, to the unit, and his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

A celebration of life will take place for George Standish, last of the 6th Hussars, will take place in Sherbrooke at the Hut, on 3 January 2026 beginning at 1300 hrs.
