William Logsdail: Portrait of Brigadier General Raymond Marc Pierre Brutinel

The Royal Canadian Hussars is the only unit of the modern Canadian army to perpetuate the 1st Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade of the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force). This brigade is lauded for its pioneering role in armoured warfare. One senior British officer called the Canadians “pioneers in the higher organization of machine gun commands,” a development that was largely attributable to Brigadier-General Raymond Brutinel. Brutinel became the General Officer Commanding of the Canadian Machine Gun Corps on 28 October 1916, and he retained the appointment until 18 April 1919. Outlined below are some stories describing the Brigade and its soldiers.
